Preventative and Combative Ageing
The one thing we all have in common is that we are all getting older. Ageing is inevitable, but if one can delay it both on the inside and on the outside, then for many its an option worth serious consideration.
Skin aging is a complex biological process influenced by a combination of intrinsic, also referred to as chronologic ageing and extrinsic factors also known as photoaging.
Intrinsic ageing refers to genetics, cellular metabolism, hormone and metabolic processes and extrinsic ageing refers to chronic light exposure, pollution, ionizing radiation, chemicals and toxins.
Intrinsically aged skin, that is skin ageing that happens naturally with time as we age, is thin and atrophic, finely wrinkled and dry.
In contracts prematurely photoaged skin, this is skin that shows signs of ageing due to external factors, typically shows a thickened epidermis, discolouration, deep wrinkles, loss of elasticity, dullness and roughness.
In photo-aged skin epidermal turnover rate and cell cycle lengthening coincides with slower wound healing. A reduction in collagen and elastin production contributes to wrinkles by weakening the bond between the dermis and epidermis. Gradual loss of skin elasticity leads to skin sagging.

What can you do to prevent premature ageing skin?
Experts agree that skin starts to age around 20 years old, and recommend that you start the road to prevention early.
In terms of your genes, it’s hard to make any real changes, so you need to rely on fixing extrinsic ageing by making sure you are including key products in your daily skin care routine and are minimising your skin’s exposure to pollution and harmful light exposure such as UV rays from the sun and Blue Light from electronic devices.

The first step to reduce signs of premature ageing is daily sunscreen use. Sun exposure contributes greatly to the skin’s ageing process. Choose a spf that is broad spectrum (protects against both UVA and UVB rays), protects against Blue light, Infra Red rays and also offers antioxidant benefits. Try Sknlogic Protect SPF 40.
Protect SPF 40Anti-oxidants are key, so look for products that contains high concentrations of ingredients like Vitamin A, C and E which is a powerful anti-oxidant blend. Antioxidants protect your skin against free radicals found in the atmosphere. Free radicals can be created from pollution such as smog, dust and cigarette smoke, as well as our good friend the sun. Try Sknlogic Hydrating Serum which contains high concentrations of Vitamin C & E and Hyaluronic Acid. Antioxidants like vitamin C & E also brighten your skin, calm irritation and even smooth fine lines.

Daily cleansing is essential. Find the right cleanser for you and cleanse twice a day. Yes even when you come home late from the club!

Keep your barrier function healthy and functioning properly. This is your skin’s first line of defence. It keeps moisture in the skin and moisture in the skin reduces the likeliness of skin problems. Your skin’s outer layer, the epidermis, is covered with a fine film of water and lipids. This film keeps skin feeling smooth or moisturised. Try Sknlogic Omega Face oil that is packed with all the Omegas, 3, 5, 6, 7 & 9 and protects your barrier function. It doubles as a primer before applying make up so that your make up glides on and you use a lot less foundation.
Omega Face OilUse a repairing mask to help repair the damage you have already unknowingly done to your skin. Sknlogic Multi Regenerating Masque has dermal stem cells that helps repair damage to the skin while keeping the skin hydrated.

Exfoliate your skin. Whether you prefer a manual exfoliator or an enzymatic exfoliator, exfoliating your skin is key. Your skin is constantly shedding skin cells. When this happens, smoother skin cells push their way up to the skin's surface. However, as you age, the rate at which your body sheds dull and dead skin cells begins to slow down. In the simplest terms, exfoliation is physically or chemically removing those dead and dulling skin cells. Exfoliating helps speed up your skin's process and helps it to behave younger. Try Sknlogic Exfoliate Enzymatic or Exfoliate.

Many people start using eye cream in their 30s, but you can start as early as your 20s. The skin around your eyes is ten times thinner than your face. As you can imagine, that means it is that much more delicate, which means it can crease and dry out a lot more quickly. Try Sknlogic Eye Cream.

Finally, make some lifestyle changes to help support your skin’s regeneration processes. Try to cut down on alcohol, sugar and processed foods, drink more water, minimise the amount of stress in your life and stop smoking (if you do). This means your skin will have fewer obstacles to overcome as you age and have a better chance of looking younger for longer. Avoid repetitive facial expression. When you make a facial expression, like for example frowning, you contract the underlying muscles. If you repeatedly contract the same muscles for may years, these lines become permanent. Wear sunglasses so that you do not cause lines by squinting.

When do I start combating the signs of ageing?
When you get to the age of 30 and you have not followed a preventative ageing protocol you need to start with a more aggressive skin care protocol. First change your lifestyle, even people who already have signs of premature skin aging can benefit from making these lifestyle changes. By protecting your skin from the sun, you give it a chance to repair some of the damage. Smokers who stop often notice that their skin looks healthier.
As you enter your 30s, your skin slows down its production of collagen, the protein that gives your skin its shape. Collagen is what helps your skin bounce back and stay plump.
With less collagen in the skin, its easier for visible wrinkles and sagging to occur. You might notice this happening more in the areas around frequently used muscles, like the forehead or where you are more exposed to the sun.
You cannot add collagen to the skin. Due to the large molecular weight of collagen found in skincare products, they do little more than add moisture to the skin. But you can help your skin produce more collagen. Stimulating collagen growth causes a domino effect, the more collagen you have, the more your body is able to produce and maintain. One study suggests that hyaluronic acid can boost collagen production in the human body. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body, but it decreases as we age. We put Hyaluronic Acid in most of our rejuvenating skincare products. Try adding Sknlogic Night Plus with Hyaluronic Acid and Growth Factors to your routine.

You can use more aggressive methods of exfoliating the skin by using products with high concentrations of Alpha Hyroxy Acids. Try Sknlogic Multi Active Lotion, which contains high concentrations of Alpha and Beta Hydraxy Acids to help with combatting the signs of ageing. You can also start considering going for regular Chemical peel treatments to increase the growth of new skin cells even more.
Although a youthful appearance is highly valued, beauty is not just skin deep. Healthy skin is a good indicator of how the rest of your body is feeling. There is no way to completely reverse the signs of aging. It is much easier to protect your skin while it’s healthy than to attempt to repair it later in life.
