Free radicals and the Science
Free radicals (also called reactive oxygen species as they usually contain oxygen) are molecules with unpaired electrons. They rob other cells of electrons causing damage.
These free radicals can cause damage at cellular level and are implicated in the development and onset of skin conditions, especially pre-mature ageing.

Once free radicals are formed, a chain reaction can occur, the first free radical pulls an electron from a molecule, which destabalises the molecule and turns it into a free radical. That molecule then takes an electron from another molecule, destabilizing it and turning it into a free radical. This domino effect can eventually disrupt and damage the whole cell. Oxidative stress occurs when there are too many free radicals and too much cellular damage. Picture free radicals as Pac-man eating away at the youthful look of your face. Each one is stealing your glow, adding pigment to your face and breaking down your elasticity causing premature ageing.

Free radicals and the Sun
Sun exposure causes free radicals to form in your body. This occurs when sunlight and the oxygen in your body mix, almost like when the combination of sunlight and water cause a car to rust or make an apple turn brown (this is called oxidation). This is like the biological rust in your body causing ageing and illnesses like cancer. Eighty percent of free-radical formation is from UV radiation.

Free radicals and Pollution
Even if you avoid the sun and wear your sunscreen religiously you are still exposing your skin to other factors that can cause free radicals. Pollutants – like smog, cigarette smoke, metal ions, radiation and even chemicals in your household cleaners, generate free radicals that exist in the atmosphere alongside the polluted air. These free radicals are on the hunt for other electrons to reach a more stable state, so they snatch them from other atoms—like the ones in human cells. This kind of damage is often referred to as Environmental damage.
