Better Protection : Why Sunscreen deserves its own layer
October 28, 2024At SKNLOGIC, we believe each layer in your skincare routine should serve a unique and effective purpose. Our moisturizers are designed to nourish and hydrate both day and night, while our Protect SPF 40 offers a robust shield against not only UVA and UVB rays but also blue light, infrared light, and environmental pollutants. Here’s why separating SPF from moisturizer leads to better skin protection:
- Different Actions, Different Needs
SPF's Role: Sunscreens are designed to sit on the skin’s surface, creating a defensive barrier against harmful rays and pollutants. Protect SPF 40 includes advanced protection against blue and infrared light, as well as pollution, ensuring that external factors stay blocked out.
Moisturizer’s Role: Moisturizers penetrate the skin, delivering hydration and nutrients. Combining SPF with moisturizer compromises this, as a moisturizer alone can’t create the protective film needed for optimal sun and environmental defense.
- SPF Dilution and Ineffective Coverage
Even when a moisturizer contains SPF, it often doesn't deliver the protection level on the label, as most people apply too little for full coverage. Separate sunscreen ensures the optimal amount of sun protection and coverage for lasting defense. For example our Diminish day includes sun protection, however we still encourage users to still use their Protect SPF 40 as this will ensure that their skin is adequately protected.
- Regulatory and Formulation Restrictions
In South Africa, all sun protection products undergo strict SANS testing to confirm their SPF value. This process is extensive and ensures that each SPF product meets high standards for effective sun defense. Including SPF in a moisturizer would mean fewer active ingredients and less flexibility to meet the criteria without significantly altering the formula’s purpose. At SKNLOGIC, we add antioxidants and reparative actives to our moisturizers for a nourishing treatment. Separating the SPF allows us to create a highly effective Protect SPF 40 with extra defenses against environmental aggressors, and adding all of the actives in higher concentrations in our moisturizer for maximum effectiveness.
4.Active Ingredient Stability
Chemical Stability: Some active ingredients in sunscreens may be less stable when mixed with certain moisturizing agents. For example, chemical sunscreens can degrade in the presence of certain oils or active ingredients commonly found in moisturizers, reducing their effectiveness over time.
- Reapplication is Key
Sunscreen becomes less effective after 90-120 minutes, especially when exposed to light. SPF should be reapplied throughout the day, but moisturizers, which are applied just morning and evening, aren’t designed for frequent reapplication.
- Misconception About Cost Savings
Some believe that combining SPF with moisturizer reduces costs, but if you continue to include the high concentrations of actives in the products that is required for maximum effectiveness it would increase the cost of the Moisturiser drastically. Adding SPF requires additional formulation steps and testing, which raises the overall production cost. By keeping SPF separate, we offer you high-quality, targeted products without inflating costs. You would still need to purchase a separate sunscreen for re-application purposes through out the day.
By keeping SPF and moisturizer separate, SKNLOGIC allows each product to excel in its role. SKNLOGIC maximizes the efficacy of both products, giving you deep hydration and advanced protection in one routine. For optimal results, apply our moisturizer first and finish with Protect SPF 40 to lock in hydration and defend against the elements.
