What is Retinol?
August 16, 2023What is Retinol?
Retinol is derived from vitamin A, this multitasking skin care ingredient is a form of retinoid.
Proliferation means growth. Retinol increase cellular turnover in the skin, meaning they grow faster, which is going to make the skin a little bit thicker. The thicker skin is stronger and smoother and has fewer overall imperfections. They also make the dead cells shed, which is a lot like exfoliating, but this is really a secondary effect. This cellular turnover makes the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of skin) more compact, which gives a nice anti-aging benefit.
Retinol itself is not necessarily functional within the skin, because it has to be converted to retinoic acid.
This is actually a two-step process that occurs in the cell. It first gets converted to retinaldehyde and then it’s converted to retinoic acid. Even though it requires two conversions, it’s still very effective, which is why it’s found in so many skin care formulations.
Retinol vs Retinyl Palmitate
Both Retinol and Retinyl Palmitate are retinoids, which means that they're converted to retinoic acid, the most active and
effective form in the skin. Retinol only undergoes one conversion step to become retinoic acid while retinyl palmitate
undergoes three steps. Retinol is the purest form of Vitamin A available without a prescription and is considered about
20% more potent than Retinyl Palmitate. Retinyl Palmitate is the weakest version, but also the least irritating, so it's a better option for someone who is new to using retinoids or has sensitive skin.
Despite the fact that retinyl palmitate is mild, it can still help improve the same skincare concerns retinol would, it is just
not as effective, and works slower than Retinol. Retinyl Palmitate is a great choice for those with more sensitive skin or
skin being introduced to retinoids. Try Sknlogic Night Plus with Retinyl Palmitate. For best results you can combine
Retinol and Retinyl Palmitate products in your regimen once your skin has built up a tolerance to Retinol. Mix Retinol 0.5
Booster and Sknlogic Multi Regenerating Masque with Retinyl Palmitate, leaving it on over night twice a week.
Using Retinol
Once you start using retinol, it’s a long game. Make a commitment to use it consistently, otherwise, you won’t see the
best results. For most people the skin also has to build up a tolerance towards the Retinol. While you may experience
some redness and irritation when you start out (due to the increased skin turnover), your skin may be able to handle
the ingredient better after a few weeks. Eventually, the skin becomes more resilient to the irritation while still
benefiting from the retinoids.
If you experience sensitivity when using Retinol try one of the following approaches.
How to use Sknlogic Retinol 0.5 Booster: After cleansing and toning, apply 2 – 3 drops to cleansed face daily (in the evenings). Use alone or add to your moisturiser, serum or masque. Should only be introduced after being on the basic products for at least 4 weeks. Do not use on irritated skin. Must use with a broad spectrum SPF of at least 40.
Do not use Retinol products while on a Chemical peel treatment regimen, or while using Multi Active Lotion, products containing Benzoyl Peroxide or high concentrations of Alpha & Beta Hydroxy Acids. Not prescribed for diabetics or during pregnancy.
Why Choose Sknlogic Retinol Booster?
Our encapsulated Retinol 0.5 Booster contains a high percentage of Retinol at 0.5% (1% is the highest that is allowed to be sold over the counter in most countries including South Africa). It is a light weight formulation that is formulated with maximum effectiveness and stability in mind. At 0.5% you get the great benefits of Retinol but it is more tolerant to the skin than higher concentrations would be.
The Sknlogic Professional Rejuvenating & Lifting Essential
treatment is performed using 1% Retinol Booster. This exposes your skin to a higher percentage of Retinol in a controlled environment. The 1% Retinol booster can also be utilized during a Micro needling treatment.
Professional Retinol 1 Booster with 1% Retinol Does not contain Parabens, Sulphates, Synthetic Fragrance, Synthetic Colourants, Lanolin derivatives, Mineral oil or MIT’s.
With added Soyaglycone
We also include Soyaglycone in our Retinol boosters. This is an encapsulated genistein, the biologically active form of the most abundant soy isoflavone.
Genistein is a powerful collagen booster: it strongly stimulates the production of collagen but also prevents its degradation by matrix metalloproteinases.
